I have been using The logwood and ferrous sulfate for the final boiling to get the American style black on damascus barrels and it works well . However an ENGLISH friend of mine
told me that he only uses Logwood without ferrous sulfate in the boiling.
Has any of you barrel finishers used Logwood without ferrous sulfate and if so, how did it look?

I believe in Dr. Gaddy's work he used the Logwood dye in boiling water only. If you leave the barrels in the boiling water with the copper sulfate too long, the etching will continue. Too long to me is anyhing over 7 seconds in room temperature distilled water with the echant.

I am finishing one now and going to use Logwood and ferrous sulfate to boil, but going to use a wash of ferrous sulfate afterwards to see if it loosens the black more. Will let U know.

I have finished the barrel in black and white. Excuse the light reflections as my photo lab is on the patio table.
The Ferrous Sulfate wash definitely helped remove the logwood black uniformly and I did use the Ferrous sulfate in the heated tank after using Ferric Chloride solution to enhance the figure/
Drew, is this categorized a twist barrel also?

Unfortunately, Cupidfish where I uploaded it has reduced the size so much that you cant see much detail or color on the barrel.
