Logwood is a tree that yields the chemical haematoxylin.This chemical was widly used for coloring cloth and is still used,often with eosin,as a stain for examination of cells- H&E stain.It combines with iron to give a blue/black color. I have spent many hours with the microscope viewing cells stained that way.
