Early trappers used to boil their traps in logwood to remove the shine from new traps and reduce scent. Its used in our context to darken the browning of damascus barrels in order to produce the 'American' black and white damascus barrel finish which was popular during the 'golden age' of American side by sides...Geo

William E Apperson Sidelock Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 411 Albemarle County,Virginia	Logwood is a tree that yields the chemical haematoxylin.This chemical was widly used for coloring cloth and is still used,often with eosin,as a stain for examination of cells- H&E stain.It combines with iron to give a blue/black color. I have spent many hours with the microscope viewing cells stained that way.

OP Stallones Sidelock Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 1,815 Likes: 4 Republic of Texas	When ferrous sulfate is added to the Logwood SOLUTION (HAEMATOXYLUM) IT TURNS IT FROM PURPLE TO BLACK BECAUSE OF THE IRON CONTENT. ALSO, IT APPEARS TO HELP LOOSEN THE BLACK RESIDUE ON THE IRON=STEEL PARTICULARLY WHEN USED AS AN ADDITIONAL WASH WHEN REMOVED FROM THE TANK.

OP Stallones Sidelock Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 1,815 Likes: 4 Republic of Texas	My tank needs about 3 gallons of water. I use a big handful of Logwood CHIPS and about 1/2 cup of ferrous sulfate(copperas). I normally have scientific measurements,but this is a close as I can get.
