Hi All -

Can someone tell me the manufacture year and value of a Charles Daly Lindner Prussian Diamond SxS with serial number 18XX?

Thanks,

The date is more than likely dependent on the initials just forward of the flats on the underside of the left tube:

"Below is a chart that correlates the Prussian Daly barrel initials with the (approximate) dates of manufacture.

Initials Make of Gun Maker Mark Date Range Serial #s
E.W. Daly None circa - 1876 7

L.G or E.G Daly None circa - 1878 105

K.S. Daly Lindner (Crown) circa 1880 - 1885 2015, 2370, 2463, 2568

A.B Daly Lindner (Crown) circa 1885 - 1890 2706, 3551, 3665

E.E. Daly Lindner (Crown) circa 1886 2929, 3044

R.S. Daly Lindner (Crown) circa 1888 3342

J.W. Daly Lindner (Crown) circa 1890 - 1892 3646, 3994

J.W. Daly Lindner (HAL) circa 1892 - 1900 264, 439, 676, 766, 792

R.S. Daly Lindner (HAL) circa 1892 - 1915 270, 300, 361, 380, 458, 584, 586, 650, 1092, 1109, 1560, 1586, 1650, 1655, 1730, 2048, 2138, 2158, 2362, 242X, 2437, 2463, 2479

M.S. or S.W. Daly Unknown Aug 1924 11574

I'll try and clean up the table in a bit - it is a little hard to read in its current format.

Hi Ken -

Thanks for the info. You're right - the table is a tad confusing.

Joe,

The key piece to putting a date estimate on this gun is whether the gun bears the "early" or "later" Lindner marks. Both marks will be found in the same spot - on each barrel just ahead of the barrel flats. The early guns (pre-1892) will have the early Lindner mark (crown over crossed pistols) while the later guns will bear the initials HAL over the same crossed pistols.

More than likely this is a later gun in which case the serial number would put its manufacture at circa. 1910/1911. I would expect the gun to have 1892 German proof marks, but not 1912 nitro proof. It should also have sideclips and a country of origin marking ("PRUSSIA").

PS - Do you have a guestimate on price range for the gun I mentioned for pre-1892 and 1910/1911?

Joe,

Let me assume for a moment that you have a circa. 1910 Daly diamond quality gun. The next step is determining which "diamond quality" model you have. SD&G always sold their guns by model designation. Some of these guns were grouped under umbrella terms such as "diamond quality", but there are big differences in retail price between models. There is a big difference in the value, for example, of a model 225 diamond quality gun versus a model 375 diamond quality gun. In 1910 the difference in price would have been $150.

A couple quick questions will help determine which diamond quality model you have -

1) Does the gun have ejectors or extractors?

2) Does the gun have any gold inlays (other than the word "SAFE" above the safety)?

3) Assuming it does have gold inlays, are the inlays done in a flat style or heavy relief style?

Once we have the model figured out, the next step is to get an idea of the condition and features of the gun (gauge, barrel length, etc.). There is a big difference in the value of a pristine model 275 for example in 20 gauge versus beat-up 12 gauge. Pictures would be especially helpful to come up with a swag on value.

Ken

Hi Ken -

First of all - the gun has been beautifully restored. I expect that may drive down the price but the gun looks new all over. I sent SN and description over to Doug Turnbull asking if they worked on it - they said no. It has ejectors. No gold but engraving is crisp and deep. It is a 16 bore.

Thanks,

Joe

Joey,

What your looking at is a Charles Daly model 275 diamond quality gun circa 1910. As the period catalog states, this model is the most popular of the diamond quality models. You can see why; it is a beautiful gun. The gun looks to be an excellent mechanical shape. The gun has been restocked but appears to be very nicely done and with very nice walnut. The stock dimensions are also very useable. The 16 gauge is a big plus. IMO the 26" tubes hurt it a tad as does the restock. I think the dealer has it priced about 20% too high, but they might be able to deal. The gun would make a superb upland piece.
