Hi folks, just back from a very long day (for an invalid)at the CLA game fair. It was a lovely day, no rain (just) and I bought my next project! VERY pleased. Back to that shortly.

I thought the layout at Ragley Hall was not as good as last year’s event. It seems more splayed than symmetrical and it just didn't feel as good to me.

Gun makers row seemed smaller, again, maybe me, but maybe it's just the current economic climate that kept some of the smaller dealers away. Who knows?

The Really Wild clothing company had delicious (for some, not I, a happily married man with two kids) girls outside tempting one in. Not sure why but just outside their stand always seemed very busy with passing traffic.

For me I was looking for something new, maybe odd, and I got it. I went to see my friends at Francis Lovels, but I knew what they had, Avalon, nothing of interest, same with many others.

I then arrived at "Pantiles Vintage Guns". Not a big stand, but my lord, I wanted two or three of the guns. Now having literally 15 minutes earlier bought my some a new Yidilz .410 over and under I had to be careful with the pennies.

Now, just before I move to it, the Yidilz. It's brilliant, for just shy of £500 ($800) I got a new Turkish made and highly rated short stocked double for my son, just brilliant, he's chuffed and so am I, we go out to play tomorrow..Somehow. smile

OK, my purchase. Amongst the guns I picked out from the corner of my eye what looked like a Joseph Lang sidelock...I had a closer look. It turned out to be a quite rare to (find for me) Joseph Lang under lever plate lock (sometimes called round lock I think). A Joseph Lang patent (although at least one other Scottish maker also appears to have claimed something very similar) the gun has a very clever locking system with decorative side plates. The action is action inside the centre and drops out with the main action and triggers.

It's not perfect, the main breech pin has been replaced and I'll need to fix a scuff on both sides of the action, but it is very nice with original damascus barrels and re-nitro-proofed in 2010. I snapped it up...pictures VERY soon.

Anyway, great day, couple of super little guns. Enjoy it if anyone is going over the weekend...beware...the trip in sucks...ask the satnav to re-direct just after the m40 and avoid the main Stratford road drag and you'll go in the back way.

Cheers!
T

I think you are Toby from Suffolk, right, and you own Barclay's Bank, is that correct, chuckle.
Very sorry to hear about your amputation, old mate.
Anyway I have a Lang just as you describe I bought at a rural Canadian gun show for $300 bucks. It needs new barrels or sleeving, right now I am scouring Canada for a stout pair of Damascus barrels to be parted and sleeved onto the Lang breech end. I have an English gunsmith who immigrated to Canada who is prepared to do the job if I can find suitable donor barrels, rather than sleeving with new steel barrels.
Are you out Lavenham way, or is it Melford?
Mike, from Coggeshall
Have you pulled out the lock and looked the the mainsprings> They are curved, and the whole lockwork is exquisite

No, Tony here! smile

I'll put some picture up of my gun soon, today hopefully. I live near Oxford in the UK.

I'll be taking the bun to pieces next week ready for restoration work and cleaning.

Be interested to see pictures of yours does it say "Lang Patent" across the top of the action?

Regads,
Toby, sorry, Tony

I was at the Game fair on Saturday. No guns bought that day. Only went on Gunmaker's row as the rest of the fair would need more than the three days to get to look around. Oddly I thought it was larger than last year. I did see another Lang lever cocker there so there must have been at least two. They are fairly scarce and I tend to notice them having one in 8 bore. I have only ever seen others in 12 or 20. I will agree that the little Yildiz .410 O/U is a neat gun for the price and well worth anyone considering. Had a good time looking at this and that. Did make a few purchases but mainly books. Met with Donald Dallas and ordered his latest book from him called Magnificent Madness. Still didn't see all of Gunmaker's row even then. Difficult to describe the size of the event to anyone who has not been. Lagopus.....

Tony, yes, sorry I was confusing you with Toby, it has "Lang's Patent" on the top of the action indeed. I have lots of pics but seem unable to post them here, if you give me your e-mail address I'll send you some pics. The very fine engraving is exquisite all over the action, even the lever.

A very enjoyable book Lagopus and much recommended. I could not make the fair this year unfortunately but glad the weather held out.
