Hi folks, picked it up at the CLA gamefair for a VERY good price. It's quite plain but interesting. It has the very clever platelock mechanism patented by the Langs in or around 1880. It has original damascus barrels and it has been re-proofed this year...had to snap it up....pictures of it and my work stripping it down...fascinating engineering piece tbh...

Striking up the barrels before the Copper sulphate bath for 30 minutes. They came up really well, small amount of rust, should not be that visible when it's done...

After the bath and wash off. The Copper Sulphate has brought out the twist in the barrels. Just what we want! smile

Tony, I'm having computer problems, fortunately Mm son in law is here for a couple of days with my daughter and granddaughter and he is a computer whiz.
My gun is not plain like yours, it's all over fine bouquet and scroll and does not have that lump on the LH sideplate, what is that?
My barrels have a hole, that's why I'm hoping to find donor Damascus barrels to sleeve onto this gun.
I'll send pics when I can,
mike

Isn't that lump probably (if I understand your question) the take-down for the locks?

It's a nice gun, and in proof! What could be better.

For great cutout views of this action go to "The Modern Sportsman's Gun and Rifle", at google books. Here's the link: http://books.google.com/books?id=OLwUAAA...;q&f=false. The Lang action is illustrated and discussed from page 201 to 204.

Mike, it's something to do with the locks as Genelang says. It IS great to have the original barrels and in proof from 2010 that's for sure.

The lock mechanism is fabulous, inherantly complex, but just unique. I love it, plain or not. smile

A very unusual and good-looking gun, you can tell by its looks it's light and going to swing like a song... what gauge is it?

I'd like to hear more about that trick with the copper sulphate. Neat gun for sure.

Hey fellas, first of it's a 12 bore/gauge. Second, Copper Sulphate. Basically strike up the barrels, get em nice and shiny. Right, then copper sulphate bunged/thrown into warm water..I just use ad lib but basically what it does is that it draws contrast out of the softer metal in the twist and thus the wind in the barrels. It's then really nicely setup for the browning... smile Dump the barrels into the solution for about 30 minutes...then wash off and brush it out of everywhere. Make sure you wear gloves...no finger oil needed from this point on!

Thanks. So the copper sulphate is a prelim to actual rust/card process of re-browning?
