A friend stopped by with a 73 in 22 short last night. everything is in order except the loading tube. You have to remove the tube and insert the shells, which is normal. His problem is that the shells won't stay in the tube after you take your finger away. It seems there is a detent missing from the aft end of the tube. Maybe we're doing something wrong?
Does anybody have a picture of what it should look like, or know a book I can reference?
thanks, bryndon

Hello Brydon, You might like to contact this guy, he does Winchester parts inc, the 73. He may be able to help. http://www.chasjonesgunparts.com/page/page/533742.htmRegards, Harry

There was a book called the Model 1873 Handbook, I'm sure out of print, that would have an answer, my copy is on loan... (Is that title correct, Terry?)

Thanks for the leads - I'll try to find a copy of the Handbook. Perhaps he has a copy of it.
He is also looking for a rear sight for a 66 Winchester if anybody has any ideas on one. He doesnt care if it's original or repro.

Do you have pics of the tube? I'm somewhat familiar with them, just had to make a new tube assy for a takedown, 22 cal 73.

If you can get past his personality, Albert Buckingham of Buckingham's in TN will be the most likely to have any Winchester part necessary. Sorry no link, but if Albert doesn't have it then probably it's not available at all. Albert charges max retail and is rather surly even when he's in a GOOD mood but he has the good stuff. Regards, Joe

I recommend that before you go out looking for repair parts, lets make sure you really need them, posting a pic of the tube would be a good start.
Joe.... Know Al B. quite well, on a good day he will try and gouge you. I know a few folks that make "original" parts for Al
As I stated earlier, I just finished making a complete tube assy (inner & outer) for a 22 cal 73, I'll try and post pics later, but they are identical (well except for the lack of pitting on the new one).
But, again, before he goes out looking for a new one, lets first determine what wrong with it, if anything. Not much that can go wrong with them.

The reference books SDH mentioned above are: "Winchester's New Model of 1873, a Tribute" by James D Gordon, 1997. This is a really fine two volume hard bound plus a soft bound volume three book set.
A much less expensive alternative might be "Winchester Lever Action Repeating Firearms, Vol 1 (Models of 1866,1873 and 1876)" by Arthur Pirkle,1994. A quick skim did not show the .22 in any significant detail.

Good to see you back Terry!! Hope you are recovering nicely..
The book I was refering to has mechanical drawings of most/all of the 1873 parts and I'm pretty sure is titled The Winchester 1873 Handbook (by Stone??) I lent my copy to Joe Smithson a few weeks ago as he has a '73 custom project in the works.
I lament never getting Gordon's opus, oh well. I've got Pirkle and still have the many photocopies and all the info you sent for our colabortion.
Again, welcome back Terry!
