Better than it feels to hunt with junk teeth and a junk body....Put that picture back up showing the full extent of the "Dunlop" disease you suffer from, homey.

I have a stock that is too short for me I need to add 1 1/2" to the LOP. There are a few ways I can do this, none of them are appealing. Which way is most exceptable and pleasing to the eye. I am leaning towards splicing walnut in it is just real hard to hide the parting line and match the grain/color etc.
1. 1 1/2" Silvers type pad 2. 1/2" black rubber spacer with 1" recoil pad 3. 1/2" butt spliced with walnut with 1" recoil pad 4. any other suggestions? #4.........these can be adjusted to almost any length and do not require destroying any wood or butt plates etc......On when you want them, off when you don't........... These are made by Pachmayr and are quality soft leather, come in three sizes - L-M-S-, suggest small for shotguns....... Best,
Doug

A stock fitter told me that lop is the least important stock measurement I don’t agree that lop is the least important measurement, it is but one measurement. Once you are ‘relatively’ close to your required LOP, I agree that small adjustments can be made with your gripping hand. However, I need a 15.5-inch lop, anything shorter than a 15-inch stock, I have my thumb up my nose no matter where I place my gripping hand – so lop is important. Several months ago I bought a Woodward 20 bore O/U that had a stock with a leather covered pad that added up being too short for me. Rather than adding a spacer, I elected to have a wooden extension to get my longer LOP. It should arrive from England in the next few weeks – I am anxious to see it!!

I have one of the slip on leather pads also, but, on some of my short guns, it has a squirmy feel that I don't care for. It doesn't fit tightly on all my guns. It would be hard to design one that did. Did we ever figure out if we a talking a Purdey, a 311, or something in between? That would help.

Depending on the other dimensions I need a LOP of 15 - 15.5" and I've always used spacers and recoil pads to get my LOP because none of my guns are valuable enough to use more expensive techniques.
On my 1866 Joseph Lang I needed to add 1.5" inches so I used a 1.5" Silvers pad and a .25" spacer.
On my 1887-1894 J&W Tolley I needed to add 1.25" inches so I used a 1" black Pachmayr Decelerator and a .5" spacer.
On my 1926 Fox Sterlingworth I needed to add 1" so I used a 1" black Pachmayr Decelerator and a .25" spacer.
To me all look fine. Most importantly they now fit me and at a cost that I can afford. None of these guns are "collector quality" - if they were I would probably use spacers and recoil pad to get my LOP and have it leather covered.

Then you have the wrong size pad.......... if it moves at all.......Both of mine fit extremely tight on the 25+ guns of different makes that I have used them on.......very firm indeed, but I only bought two of the small size ones as I had been told the other sizes were way too big indeed......and all my guns have uncut original factory wood ........and I am tall as well.......small is the only size that fits firmly IMO..........

The black rubber donuts even in very substantial widths can look OK if they're properly faired to the stock and pad and finished without divots and scratching. No reason you can't put a bit of sweat equity into the practise of Mark Larson's art even on a utility gun if you want a wood extension. Coat of shellac and the fabled two-bristled sable should get you some sort of faux grain match which you can finish over.

I use these, too, and have for many years. However, I use the Kick-Killer brand (they look just like them and are very good quality) with the lace-up feature as opposed to the velcro flap. The laces let you tighten them down really tight if you need to. Mine have never moved with me, but I don't switch them around much, just leav'em on the guns that need'em. Problem is, Doug, he said he needs 1 1/2" added. These only add roughly 1/2". I don't know how well they would work with a 1" spacer inside them. Stan
May God bless America and those who defend her.
