First, all grafting jobs are just that, a graft or an extension, and 99% are visible. I was not trying to hid anything, just trying to make the gun fit me, not you, or anyuone else.

Plus, I stated the person who cut this stock was a jerk for doing so, I didn't call everyone a jerk that likes recoil pads. It is a preference for some, but not me. With the available loads out there now, again my opinion, there is no need for one.

NOW, if your LOP is longer than the standard 14-14 1/2 LOP than a recoil pad is for you to add an extra 1/2'-1". I have seen 1 1/2' recoil pads, and they are ugly. Plus you must have read also that I only attached it with two screws to remove later if I wanted to blend a better piece if I desired.
A new stock with the wood that gun has would be around $2500 finished.

So, Jim, I did not call you a jerk.

Now you can't even own up to what you stated! Anyone who installs a recoil pad has to cut the stock a bit to get rid of the curve where the "beautiful" hard rubber or plastic buttplate was. That's the way a proper installation is done. You did call millions of people who like and use recoil pads "jerks". And it was offensive.

I think this wood is worth it and much better than the original. Kinda why I don't want to do the big pink eraser. Does anyone have more pics of a wood splice that duplicates original and does anyone have a pic with the rubber spacer in place?

So be it Jim. If that is what you take it for. If you read the whole thing and stopped to let it "sink" in. I stated that the stock now was 12 3/4". That's a little farther than the curve of the stock. That is the "jerk" I was referring to. I guess I should have defined the real jerk better.

Here's a method I've wanted to try, but the right gun has not come along. It involves a pad and a wood graft as a spacer, but the difference is the wood spacer is checkered finely all over, about 22> lpi. I wish I had pictures, but I don't. It's seen occasionally on Parkers, and Julias sold several Parkers back a few years ago on which this had been done. A leather covered pad would be a nice accent if you don't like the eraser look.

DaveWp, if your "elsie" 16 ga is a Field Grade, is it a FW (Featherweight) or Regular Frame? You cannot interchange one from the other. The Regular frame is bigger.
Even if it is from the same frame size stock, all L.C. Smiths were hand inletted. You might get lucky and have one fit from another FW gun, more likely you will have some hand inletting to get the side locks to fit correctly to the new stock.

The gun is a FW and the stock was not a problem to fit at all.
The gun is 1939 and the serial # on the stock matched up to a 1946. Elsie held their tolerences pretty good in this case. I was surprised how easy it was to inlet--I am now going to glass it and make it fit like a glove.

The wood/checkered spacer sounds interesting--anyone else seen this?
