I think the root of it is that they are a pretty well known (and already discussed) gun. Maybe pricey enough to push them out of the mainstream. They are old enough to have an air of nostalgia about them, but not a lot of history in the sense that Doc Carver, Prince Edward, and TR shot one However, the a lot of other famous people (if that matters) that have shot them since the introduction in 1931.

You might also want to check out the M21 website: http://www.model21shotgun.comThe Schwing hardcover book is out of print. However, I've got one advertised for sale on the M21 site. $10 to Dave if you buy it off that site.

I am certainly no expert on engravers but I was going through some Gun Digest magazines from 61 through 76 and I agree with Terry, it looks alot like Griebels' emgraving. But it also looks alot like Paul Jaegers work or The Pachmayer Gun Works work. I hope you can find out who the engraver was. It would be nice to know that information. It's too bad so many great engravers rarely signed their work.

Several people have also stated Arnold Giebel. I tend to agree, now I have looked at pictures of engraved guns he did. The small trees on several other guns are identical. Does anyone know if Griebel worked or did work for Marshall Fields Co. during 1947?

I would assume that Arnold did work for MF since he was in Chicago and well respected. I would like to see closer pictures of the gun to compare the style and subjects with other guns he did. Arnold did many "stock" scenes, especially on Model 32 Remingtons and Krieghoffs, but this gun does not seem to be a "stock scene". A gun made for the president of MF, outrageous. The Cody letter could shed more light.

I never liked engraving on a Model 21. They should be unadorned and their frames as black as night splattered with mud and dirt now that's when they're beautiful!! The only engraving they need is the name 'WINCHESTER' stamped on their barrels and that's pretty much all that needs to be said.

Trebling,
I know you are right but, this is all all I could get for $525.00 and my old single barrel model 37 using it for a trade in. The guy I bought the 21 from agreed with you, said someone had "RUNIT IT". I will have it out on September 1st for the opening of dove season and try to break it in since it looks like no one has been shooting it......
