Now that i've got your attention: Is it better to let the hammers(in this case on a double rifle)rest completely on the nipples or should one cock back one notch to avoid pressure on said nipples (but putting more pressure on the cocks)?

If you have a non-rebounding hammer gun you would want to carry the gun on half cock when loaded. If not loaded, either way works. With rebounding hammers the the hammer is automatically kept at the half cock position...Geo

Krakow, are you talking about carrying or storing the double? From the reference to nipples, I take it this is a muzzle-loader. Either flint or cap, I store them down and carry at half-cock. My breech-loading double is hammerless, so I haven't established a routine for a hammer double, but I suspect I'd store hammers down, whether rebounding or not.

Joel

I apologize for this late response. Yes, Joel, the gun is a muzzleloader (Joseph Lang 1825) and hammers down is the way to go. Many Thanks to the both of you
