According to Galazan's serial number chart, Scott numbers in that range were 1871 or 1872. Is that too early for a McComas breechloader?

What I meant by chamber length was how long an 8 gauge shell does it shoot ?
8 gauges were made to accommodate different length shells.

No, I was referring to the number on the trigger guard.

No, I was referring to the number on the trigger guard. OK but would that number (2431) indicated when the gun was made (1871-1872)? I'm just trying to date the gun. If the 1871 date is correct, Mr. McComas was only 28 years old.

Jack, I believe the gun is more from 1880-1890 or so. I have a very early Clark and Sneider 8 gauge top-lever and it dates to 1873 or so. The Serial N2431 appears to be a consecutive type system...where other McComas 8 ga under-levers and top levers I have researched are N2302, N2416, N2426, and N2538...etc.. Jeff

p.s. I have an 8 gauge McComas muzzle-loader circa 1860 and it is N2062...marked on the trigger-guard, inside forearm, and on the barrels. Two other 8 gauge muzzle-loaders I know of are numbered N2219 and N2237. Jeff

Thanks for the great research, Jeff. Obviously, they are McComas numbers, not Scott numbers. However, McComas must have started his numbering system in the twos somewhere.

JackJ, the information I have would indicate that Alex would have been about 50 years old in 1871. His lifespan is reputed to be 1821 to 1892. Jeff, what is your information on this? I am not much of a researcher.
