Uh, Ted, to be fair to the handsome and learned Dr., back a ways I waxed anecdotal about stuck wads in tight bores (got to stop these digressions) and Wonk lost patience and prescribed a course of personal insult therapy. So thoughtful!
I've got the BP and Precision Reloading fiber wad load data. Ain't much. The first Lyman shotgun reloading manual has pages of loads with transitional stuff that can't be found except in mouldering basements and garages. Guy on Shotgun World says Speer Manual #8 had pertinent data. Looks like it's difficult to find U.S. distributor for Eley at the moment. Any other commercially-available hunting loads with wadding similar to Eley Gamebore?

Not in my end of town-I'm working off inventory. Some of the plastic wad loads are actually stuff that isn't loaded anymore-obsolete, from gun shows and garage sales, picked up for experiments like this, or, to throw in the car in case a hunting buddy runs out of ammunition. Green and yellow boxes of Remington, tan and red boxes of Federal, red and yellow boxes of Winchester. Old, in some cases. It is all factory loaded, no handloads. I did fire some different rounds of fresh inventory too, and got similar, dismal results. Nice, even patterns with the Eley felt wad loads, which, is the big, fat, black horsefly in the yogurt. I have one box of Aguila, it isn't new, either, and features felt wads, patterns look like the Eleys. I should pattern some of the old stuff in other guns, maybe I'm not doing anyone a favor by giving it to them.
Best, Ted

Uh, Ted, to be fair to the handsome and learned Dr., ....... Wonk lost patience and prescribed a course of personal insult therapy. So thoughtful! jack It's only an insult when it's not true - otherwise it's just a statement of fact. TS - yer a dork. Your incessant homosexual references are way past tiresome. They also would usually be considered to indicate a repressed proclivity. I was gonna tell you to KMA but that is likely something you'd want to pursue. Dr.WtS

Now that you have your degree, Dr. Sane, no need to sit around regressing your proclivities at a time when large universities and major corporations are sorely in need of qualified DIrectors of Programming, Special High Intensity Training. The lists of applicants for these positions are long and competition stiff but our lively conversation has convinced me beyond doubt that you are preeminently qualified as you appear to have complete mastery of Basic Understanding Lecture List, Special High Intensity Training. I believe you would not find the mandatory probationary period in the Departmental Employee Evaluation Program, Special High Intensity Training particularly odorous and very possibly you could be sent almost immediately to Employee Attitude Training, Special High Intensity Training, allowing you to assume your vast responsibilities on an accelerated timeline. I will be happy to provide a character reference should that prove advisable.

The guy who has spent ten years posting 'bout how sane he is wants to discuss my repressed behavior indicators. Back at ja, Chas. Per usual, nothing added from your end of any use to anybody.

The 5 pages of this thread documenting the helter-skelter variations found in 12-bore bore-diameters should (but won't) put an end to the endless threads about which El Cheapo drop-in choke measuring device is the best way to predict how many pellets will wind up in a 30-inch circle at 40 yards. Ted's statement early on that felt wads should "fit better" in his Uggie was, I believe, a statement that they would obturate adequately and efficiently in a gun bored for them; not that they would have greater obturational efficiency than plastic skirted wads. With all the talk of finding the load the "gun likes" and the British practise (or pretense?) of specifying an optimum cartridge for which a gun is bored, choked, and regulated, I find it a bit hard that a suggestion of experimentation with a previous "state of the art" (in a gun which seems to be designed to shoot pre-Remington and pre-Olin fodder) should be taken as the introduction of an embarassing "elephant in the room". Bore scrub and setback deformation in the old loads may indeed produce deficient performance cf. to modern loadings in modern guns and that relative performance may vary by many magnitudes. The real question for me at least was about the possibility of performance of a specific gun being optimized by ammunition I presumed to think it was designed to handle. In other words, could compatibility of gun and ammo produce any result worth resurrectiong? I don't know. To be continued. . . .
