Watching some earlier listing and a recent one by Channing, I can't see how this system is not a recipe for some hard feelings. As I see it, A member lists a WTB item, and any responses are fair game to anyone who can get there first. I know we are a group of gentlemen and always wait our place in line, But we might eliminate a feeding frenzy if contacts and transactions are made in private. Beyond that, individuals are able to simply list there item for sale and get on with it. Am I missing something here? Has anyone been hijacked by this current system? Randy

Feeling somewhat the way you do I PMed someone who posted something for sale within less than a hour of when they listed it, rather than put my interest post on the board, and either they never got the PM or didn't have the decency to ever write back as i PMed them several more times in the next couple days. So the only point I am going to make here is if you post something wanted or for sale keep an eye on the board and you're PM's and try to be fair as to who contacted you first and respond in a timely manner to all inquiries. Just my .02 worth...

RMC,
"I know we are a group of gentlemen and always wait our place in line." This isn't necessarily a true statement! Last spring there was a fox for sale that I pm'd the seller on. He told me that I was second in line, and if the 1st didn't want the gun, he'd let me know.

A couple of days later, I was traveling to Denver and upon arriving, I plugged my laptop in and saw that the seller had pm'd me saying the gun was mine if I wanted it. I had checked my emails prior to leaving with no pm from seller, so there was probably a 6-7 hr lag time between email checks. Immediately called and was told that the third in line had already faxed an FFL and money order, so he had sold the gun to him(her). This didn't seem very gentlemanly to me!

Of course, to give the buyer the benefit of the doubt, he could have been told that buyer #2 (me) wasn't interested in the gun because I didn't immediately email the seller back.

First instance. The second concerned a Lefever. I was in line for a lefever, had pm'd the seller about price and other particulars, which we agreed upon. I told him, I'd get the FFL and money order sent after work that day. Later that day, the seller had pm'd me saying that he had received a call from, I presume a BBS member, who had made him a better offer and that he sold the gun to him.

Again, not very gentlemanly! I feel I was shafted on the only two attempts I've made to purchase guns listed. I determined at that time, that there are some vultures hovering around here that have no scrupels when it comes to the pursuit of a desired shotgun.

I wasn't raised that way, and if I happen to miss out on a gun due to my refusal to use, used car salesman tactics, so be it!

I,m not complaining,I know that there are bugs in every system. There were two different items in the last two weeks that I reponded to within the first few minutes of the for sale post.An Ugartechea 20g and a LC smith. It seems both sellers never recieved my private messages.I still consider it the best site on the net with a great service.

Let me see if I get this right. Is there a system which Dave can put in place, different from most of the rest of the e-market that prevents us, not his site, from behaving badly? Not sure the complaint should be with Dave.

How good is the PM feature since we changed to the new setup? I know that on the old board, which I checked pretty much daily, I'd sometimes fail to notice I had a pm, because I didn't get all that many. I have neither listed anything for sale recently, nor have I bought recently. However, in the past when I've put up "for sale" items, I've always included my email. Much harder to miss an incoming email than it is a PM.

I have my preferences set to send me an email when I receive a PM. I believe that the rules for the For Sale forum still say that no replies are to be placed on the posting, that all communications should be off board. I'll have to check, but that is what I remember. In any case I think that's the way is should be, all follow-up coomunications in private.

Without arguing whether or not it is fair, I do not think replies should be allowed on the for sale board. That should be handled privately, by phone calls and/or direct e-mails. It wastes space and time. The PM problems need to be fixed and ad posters should allow direct e-mails to them. TMO.

On the last board, the PMs reliably triggered emails to me. I'll check my settings to make sure it works.

But policing good etiquette is pretty much impossible. Reminders is about all that anyone can do. Maybe an etiquette charter for the bbs would be the place for this. Sometimes people do objectional things unintentionally because they don't realize what they're doing is poor etiquette.

I would prefer to post an email address and have on board replies blocked. A reply on the board only creates more work for the guy selling the item. The way it should work is that the seller should get an email, a phone call, and a check in the mail, in that order. He shouldn't have to carry on an on board discourse with anyone who feels he needs to comment. This is a "for sale" site, not a double gun discussion board.
