Ted's statement early on that felt wads should "fit better" in his Uggie was, I believe, a statement that they would obturate adequately and efficiently in a gun bored for them; not that they would have greater obturational efficiency than plastic skirted wads. With all the talk of finding the load the "gun likes" and the British practise (or pretense?) of specifying an optimum cartridge for which a gun is bored, choked, and regulated, I find it a bit hard that a suggestion of experimentation with a previous "state of the art" (in a gun which seems to be designed to shoot pre-Remington and pre-Olin fodder) should be taken as the introduction of an embarassing "elephant in the room". Bore scrub and setback deformation in the old loads may indeed produce deficient performance cf. to modern loadings in modern guns and that relative performance may vary by many magnitudes. The real question for me at least was about the possibility of performance of a specific gun being optimized by ammunition I presumed to think it was designed to handle. In other words, could compatibility of gun and ammo produce any result worth resurrectiong? I don't know. To be continued. . . .
