One is a hammer gun and the other "isn't" These were part of my late Army colonel father's weapon collection. I can't find anything on the web about Ecker, but these are very nice and I'd appreciate any information you could give me, but here are some very detailed shots I took of the guns and the proof marks, etc. Double Guns I'd really appreciate your time to look at these as I am at a complete loss. Dad's Luger, Mauser, Walther and Colt Peacemaker were MUCH EASIER to IDENTIFY! These two are a puzzle.

Wels is in upper Austria: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wels . I'm not familar with the maker but I would venture a guess that the stamp of the overlapping "JE" on the tubes of the hammerless is his. The stock also appears to wear the same "JE" on the hammerless example. He may have contributed a large effort toward the finishing of the hammerless from sourced components. The hammergun is quite interesting in that the tubes wear the preliminary German mark, appear to have been finished by Lucian Clement of Liege and then proofed in Ferlach in 1914, with 2 data strings on the water table. The metal butt plate usually points to an earlier period that WWI. I'll say you really put forth an image capturing effort. Kind Regards, Raimey rse

Raimey, Thank you for your knowledge.
I was AMAZED at the number of marks on these two guns!
I've found the secret is getting a digital with a macro setting (my Pentax has a "flower" as the macro indicator) and it wasn't a real expensive camera, take the shots indoors near a curtained window, never use the flash as the camera can not focus if the item is dark enough to need the flash, and depress the button half-way allowing the auto-focus to really decide what to do, then slowly squeeze the rest of the way down. It can be tedious, but when you need all the details - then YOU NEED ALL THE DETAILS! And a photobucket account is only $25 a year.
I hope others will have more information to add!

Johann Ecker still keeps a Rod & Gun retail shop in Wels, and also advertises metalwork, so seems to be a gusmith/gunmaker as well. With kind regards, Jani

Jani, Do you have contact information? I got some "hits" on Google that were in German, but none "seemed" (remember, I speak TEXAN ya'll)to be about a Johann Ecker in Wels that had anything to do with GUNS! There is, however, apparently, a VERY FAMOUS DOG BREEDER by that name!
You have done far better than I, and I'd appreciate a website, email, phone number or address if you found one.
Thanks so much.

I just found: Website: www.waffen-ecker.atE-mail: office@waffen-ecker.at I'm quite sure they will understand Texan - if you keep it simple! With kind regards, Jani P.S.: It can be seen from their website that the new owner is Klaus Ecker.

BTW very nice doubles. The hammer gun was originaly a "cape gun" (Büchsflinte), with a rifle barrel on the right-hand side, as witnessed by a set trigger as well as the peep sight. The architecture is typically Ferlach, especially "cocks" and lock plates.
With kind regards to Texas, Jani

Jani, I found the website too after YOU gave me the "Magic Words" WAFFEN ECKER. And I wrote them a nice email with a link to my photobucket...and the email bounced.
So, I found a site that has all the businesses in Wels, street-by-street, and I may try to email one or two of the neighboring businesses and ask them to forward that email to the Eckers.
Failing that, I may resort to actually sending them a letter.!!!
I have never been told WHAT the "other" gun is...if it is not a "hammer gun" does it have a category it falls into? Do you know?
