When the Mauser book first came out I talked with Jon Speed and the subject of the misspellings came up. He seemed very upset and seems someone had dropped the ball in regard to the spelling.

The book is a fine one, well worth having if you have an interest in the Mauser 98 sporting rifle.

I've talked with Jon several times and he is a sharp guy and very knowledgeable on anything Mauser.

It is a fine book and if tentman has looked at it he now sees that the only factory Mausers with round pistol grips and the only schnables are similar to this Springfield.

I can attest from my first publishing experience that one simply cannot rely on editors or proof readers to correct mistakes. They have even been known to change words correctly spelled in the original manuscript. Criticisms like this only come from those who have not been published. Personally, I am a rotten speller and a worse typist and edit Everything I write, including all of my posts here, multiple times. I have spellcheck and three dictionaries always at hand, use them regularly and still manage to screw things up.

My first experience with this forum was when a fellow here posted that I must not pay attention to detail in my custom gun work because the spelling in my book was incorrect. I went to the libray to respond because I was not online but these folks weren't having any of it.

I guess that makes me a poor speller adn a bad gunmaker..

Fred, IMO that is not a factory stocked sporting Mauser and the DST is not any I have seen out of Oberndorf.

I too have talked with Jon and his books are based on a huge archive of original Oberndorf documents he has amassed over the years including original glass plate negatives. Very interesting fellow; he has accumulated more data that he can possibly sift through in his lifetime.

I have all his books and anything Mauser I go there first.

I am reading a book by a Harvard graduate and Rhodes Scholar and have found 2 misspelled words so far.I am not letting it worry me at all.

It's not even a Mauser!

Let me start by saying...I am not by way of bragging, a Harvard Graduate [Law '78] but I have a funny story, you may all enjoy. The character of Professor Kingsfield in "THE PAPER CHASE" was based on a professor at HLS, Edward H."BULL" Warren. He was brilliant but a notorious bad speller and would cut one to the bone with his sharp tongue.One student kept saying "Professor Warren shouldn't that be such and such for the word "various" and such and such for the word "negligent"?" when he [Warren] had written on the chalkboard. Finally Warren looked at the young man and said "Smith do you know how to spell "failure"?" Smith replied "of course"! Warren looked at him and said "Well it's good you do, because I already have a job as a full tenured professor at HLS despite my spelling skills. You on the other hand, may need that word to remind yourself of the value of your's [spelling skills], while you're sweeping up spit in a gin joint in the Bowery in spite of them!!!!" Smith never corrected the professor again. Something to think about. Warmest to all Jerry

I am, obviously, completely intolerant about bad spelling and accept no excuses for it. It is jarring and ruins the narrative flow of otherwise good writing. Of coorse, I never make any sich erors miselph.

A good many years ago now, I was absolutely flabbergasted to find that My Daughter's teachers didn't routinely count off points for spelling errors. Still yet another abject and shameful failure by the 'Educators' guild, an error that will eventually and inevitably join the 'new math' and the 'whole language' fiascos on the rubbish heap of public education.

I fairly worship a good teacher but OTOH I spit on an 'educator'.
