Great story Stan, felt like I was sitting there under a shade tree sipping a cool lemonade taking it all in. A great day indeed for a fiftieth, here's to another fifty.

I missed out on doves this weekend Stan and Bobby. I had about 100 rolls of hay on the ground that kept me sidelined.

Went to pick up my father, who is 90, to take down to the farm to shoot doves. He was too tired to go he said. told me to go on but I just could not. We sat and talked for a several hours. Had a cup of coffee and just talked. This was the best opener that I can remember.

Ten years ago I would have thought it was the end of the world to miss shooting a field full of doves like that. Today I feel blessed just to be able to talk to my father. Just another sign of how I am getting old. Took the boys down a few days later and they each got a limit. Mostly I thought of my father and his father and watched the boys shoot. Looking back I can see he did the same thing for me and my brother 40 plus years ago. Time is the one thing we can not buy at any cost.

Rockdoc, that's the reason I posted it. Glad you enjoyed it.

Replacement, it is a civilized shoot, but not pretentious. I have been on a few of those and really don't care for them. Man, you're tough, walking up doves in 119 degree heat. Whew!

Sorry to hear your season's over Jaycee. The last day of duck season I go into a blue funk that hangs with me for awhile. Only way I can shake it is to remember that sporting clay competition is about to get started then.

KY Jon, you had a day that you will most likely remember all your life. Times like that are much more important than just another shoot. It's tough to see someone you love lose the ability to participate when you know down inside that they really miss it. But, what a blessing to have had him all these years. I so miss my Daddy and Grandaddy.

Stan,

Sounds like a great shoot. Sure wish I could have made it. We found a shoot south of Albany in Camilla for the opener. It turned out pretty well for most of the guys... although I had a slow spot and only managed 5. Unfortunately the guys in the "hot seats" shot much more than there limits so there wasn't much switching blinds. Still had a great time. It's hard to beat a good 'ole dove shoot in the South.

Adam, glad you got to shoot some, wish it had been better for you. Our hosts' son shot over the limit and made his father very unhappy. I think he got a good tongue lashing. It is embarrassing to ask all your guests to respect the limit, then have your son disregard it.

I can hardly wait for colder weather to drive the migratory doves down into the peanut fields. Begone gnats!! Peanuts are maturing much ahead of schedule here because of the extensive heat this summer. Looks like we'll be digging in a couple of weeks.

I have already seen a couple peanut fields harvested. The host of the shoot we went to is going to have a shoot on a peanut field in 2 weeks. Hope we can go.
