Drawing specs for L C Smith call for a conical-parallel choke, at least in the years covered in the Plans & Specs book. I cannot of course say that during their history they never used a taper choke, but I don't believe they are common on a Smith.
Guns purposely made with a taper choke usually have a longer choke section than do those using the conical-parallel.
My Lefevers, which also use the taper choke system, shot very well indeed with shotcups, so I don't think a parallel is a necessity for shotcup loads either.
