hey everyone, This is my first post so please be easy on me! smile. mY grandpa just handed down to me a double barrel black powder gun that he says his grandpa bought in the 1800's sometime. I will post pics tomorrow when i can take some good ones. But for now i am interested to see if anyone can give me information on this gun from what i know. From looking at it, it looks to have engraved L C butler on both sides.. Ancd also it has KC engraved. I know this is not much info but i will post pics tomorrow. Thanks!

Will wait for photos. I have found a lot of Butlers listed as British Gunmakers but sadly no L.C. Any idea where it was made? Lagopus.....

Trey,

Be sure to include pictures of any markings on the barrel flats and frame/receiver.

What was your great, great grandfather's name? Initials KC?

So it's not L C Butler but Jos Butler as in Joseph?

Looks like a nice gun. Find that camera!

Looks to have a Purdey patent snap action. Styling indicates late 1860's to early 1870's. I've found a Joseph Butler trading from 16a Weaman Street, Birmingham circa 1860; (too early for the action so might have been in business a little longer than indicated), could be your man. Pictures of proof marks will help an awful lot. Lagopus.....

In my opinion this is the origin of your Butler gun:
Joseph Butler & co; 179 E Madison Street, Chicago Ill.
1870-1880, primarily re-barrellers and choke borers, but made a few guns on W.&C. Scott Actions, guns carried the Jones name. Your gun has the lines of a typical higher grade Scott. The gold shield with the engraved initials is found on higher grade Scott guns.
