Joseph Butler, born in England, had been in business with James Golcher, also born in England, in Philadelphia. Together they formed basis of Golcher's Eagle Gun works.

Butler moved to Chicago about the same time that William Golcher moved to St. Paul, early 1850's. For a time Thomas L Golcher and his brother worked for Butler in Chicago

Purdey Thumb Hole actions were used as a base for many Illinois makers-Donn,Fred Abbey, George Abbey, Joseph Butler and Thomas. So it almost certain that Butler was importing actions from both Scott and Purdey.

Your gun, while not rare, is not very common.

nice pictures but not all that helpful. When you take the barrels off the gun there is a flat area in the chamber area of the barrels. This area is the barrel flats. Stamped on the flats and/or the barrels in front of the flats under the forend you will find all sorts of numbers, letters, and symbols stamped into the barrels, these numbers, letters, and symbols contain very important information about your gun. This is the information that you need to post here.

Looks a quality piece but I would have someone sort out that right hand hammer screw and top tang screw just to make it look a lot better. Only a small job but well worth it. As per Rockdoc, proof mark details could tell us a whole lot more and may help to both date and indicate the origins of your gun. Lagopus.....

It appears to have been a nice gun before some camel jockey got ahold of it with those screw drivers.

Unless the barrels are pristine....As it is I think you'd be hard pressed to get 5 or 6 hundred bucks for it.

I'm well aware of that...fixed, engraved and timed is not going to come cheap.

It appears there's quite a bit of wood shrinkage (maybe to the point of things becoming loose). Could this have caused the screws to be buggered ?...I'm sure there's a reason.

Hey everyone I started this post over a year ago now and forgot about it. Well I was looking at my shotgun earlier and am very curious about the history of it the following is what the engraving beneath the barrel says (sorry cant get a good pic of it) "j.P patent no 1104 3019" then "purdeys patent bolt" then "4369" then "W&C. scott&son makers"

It also has what appears to be a stamp of a castel and the number 13 and letter z on the bottom side of the barrel.

trey 1010.The 1104 refers to Purdey patent of 1863[Double bite lock up for shotgun action.]In this case activated by a push forward under lever.Often refered to as a thumb hole lever action.
Your gun was made by W.&C.Scott,Birmingham using the Purdey patent action.The 3019 # could well be a patent use number[ie: denotes patent use and royalty paid].
The castle mark is W.& C.Scott,s trade mark.It was applied to guns of their manufacture.
13 is the bore size of the barrel so marked at time of proof.[The gun is however a 12 gauge and will be chambered accordingly]
4369 is the serial number of the gun.Because this gun was made for sale by others, the serial number is unlikely to relate to Scotts recorded serial number sequence.The number was likely specified by Butler.
The gun was high grade and may well justify restoration.
