Michael: I believe this pattern does not have its origin in gunmaking but in furniture making. Particularly clergiac carvings from England and France circa the 17th century onward. It goes by several names but the most common one I heard to describe it, when I lived in the U.K. was "EDGE CROWNING" It was popular because it rarely chipped and needed repairing on oak and the like.
