OK, I'll check out the leather folks. Any reference to "Imperial Style Carving"?
Anyone not agree that all the rifles pictured so far are by the same person?

I like Imperial as the carving reminds me of a crown.

Michael: I believe this pattern does not have its origin in gunmaking but in furniture making. Particularly clergiac carvings from England and France circa the 17th century onward. It goes by several names but the most common one I heard to describe it, when I lived in the U.K. was "EDGE CROWNING" It was popular because it rarely chipped and needed repairing on oak and the like. Hope this helps. Warmest Regards Jerry

Of course I do not know for sure but carving were from company patterns and I would think G&H probably had more then one carver do the work and checkering.
Have you talked to anyone at G&H to see if they know anything on the subject?

Mike, I think these carvings are very close to Pennsylvania Dutch (Deutsche) Tulip motifs.

I'll check them all out. On the phone today I talked with a man who has one in his shop. He said it was Acanthus leaf.
In the early years G&H hired stockmakers who I believe did the whole stock. If you look at No. 15 above it appears to be the work of Fred Adolph. I'll have to dig out a better copy.
Up until a few years ago no one knew Fred Adolph worked for G&H, now they do.
I'm on the trail of this maker and feel I have a good idea who it was.
I get along fine with the folks at G&H but this is beyond their scope of things.

Michael: I have owned several rifles with Acanthus leaves carvings and these are most definitely NOT Acanthus leaves! Acanthus leaves are usually seen on German,Austrian,Czech and Polish guns. Think heavy Germanic style carvings surrounding the checkering when you think Acanthus leaves. Just an observation based on several years in Europe. Jerry

They all look like stylized fleur de lis to me, but I'm no fleur de lis connoisseur!
