Rifles made by this person are all very early ones which makes me think that when James V. Howe went to Cleveland, Ohio to work at Hoffmans he took someone from G&H with him.

It may not be "classic" acanthus, but you can't be wrong with "stylized" acanthus.

All the best!

Lets call him John, now John is established at Hoffman and we see a lot of carved stocks out of the Hoffman shop.

Looked at at the picture enlarged and that is really some nice carving.

They do look like acanthus leaves laid flat. I have a fully opened acanthus leaf engraved on each side of the receiver of a Thomas Turner BLE that looks quite similar in form, although the gun dates from the 1890s, not the middle third of the 20th century.

Looks a lot like some of the carving that August Pachmayr did on a gun that was pictured in "GunFacts" magazine 40 years ago.Of course, I suppose the German patterns were used by many of the same carvers.

Mr. Petrov:

Light blue or the white seems to show the detail best.

FWIW (not much, I know).

Thanks, I know, just playing, I'm getting bored with the old gray-white background. Most of my background is via Photoshop so wanted to see what a real background was like.

Just evaluating the carving, the No # G&H, the first Hoffman and the G&H with it look to be by the same hand.
The #3 G&H and the #15 brochure are high qualtiy and have the look of Adoph's work.
The carving of last rifle (Hoffman) looks vastly more detailed and sophisticated and I'd be very surprised is it was by the same hand as any of the preceeding rifles.
The maple stock is sub-par for the group with many over-runs in the checkering borders and shallow relief.
I have done a bit of relief carving of longrifle stocks in my time...

(Mike, Without giving all the subjects names or numbers it is very difficult to evaluate them.)
JMHO! Steve
