A friend is looking at this gun. I know little about Darnes so I thought you guys could help. Is it a Darne? If so, what model and grade is it? If it isn't a Darne, what is it? These are the only photos I have of it. Thanks for your help. Chris

It is only a Darne, if, in fact, it says "Darne" or "Halifax" on the opening lever. "Francisque Darne" or anything else, doesn't count. The photos show an 1894 patent sliding breech gun. It may be an actual Darne or a copy. My money would be on a Francisque Darne, oweing to the shape of the breech balls. It would appear to NOT be a mono-bloc gun also, meaning if it is an actual Darne, it is an old one. Francisque Darne was Regis Darne's eldest son, who hung out his own shingle in 1910. He perished in 1917, but, his company soldiered on until 1955.
Best, Ted

Chris, It's a sliding breech gun, but may not be a Darne. Your man needs to check between the ears that pull up to move the breech. If the word "Darne" is there, it's a Darne. Edit: Thanks Ted for adding the note about the word, "Halifax," too. A number of makers manufactured sliding breech guns, including a son of Regis Darne, Francisque. Also the Charlin is an elegant sliding breech that uses ball bearings to make a very smooth slide as you open/close the breech. Only Darne, now owned by the Bruchet family, is still in business. A website for French guns, including sliding breech exists at http://gournetusa.com/darneusa/new_page_1.htmOne you determine it's a Darne, the only way to get the model and grade is to look at the barrel flats where a number of small round marks may be punched. If there are none, but thw word Darne is on the flats (and between the ears) it's a R-10 if,say five, it's an R-15 after which you get a different design with V-grade that usually run from nine-twelve round punch marks V-19 to V-22. Check gunsamerica.com for asking prices of different models/grades. If it is, say, a Charlin, you will see hares, or birds or stars to indicate the grade and the more of them the better... Regards, Tim

Ted, Thanks - I didn't realize it was the same gun. My friend who is looking at it just sent me the photos yesterday. I guess a few people know about it. I'm just trying to help him identify it. It looks like a nice one, but then I know nothing about these sliding breech guns. I'd like to shoot one someday just for the experience. Thanks again for your help. Chris
