I live in what at times seems a ridiculously small house. In the interest of domestic tranquillity I'm thinking about moving my safe to the unheated garage. The garage does have a wood stove that I run often in the winter for ski tuning, gun work and auto repairs but the temps will drop to 0 F at times. My safe is equipped with a golden rod. Is this a good idea or am I at risk of rust?

I would be more concerned it would be more accessable to theives.I had trouble getting the wife convinced it belonged inside as well but won her over buy allowing her a section to store jewelry so she gave in.It could have been worse if I wanted some other area like closet space thou

Not to worried about theives around here and it'll be bolted to the floor. My little lady doesn't wear much in the way of jewelry and let me reiterate it's a SMALL house with 3 dogs (4 when my pup arrives). I'm really curious whether or not my treasured guns will be at risk from the cold temps.

I wouldn't put my safe/guns in the garage.
But, if your safe is a fire rated safe, a lightbulb or couple of goldenrods may provide enough heat to maintain it at a reasonable temp and keep the relative humidity from condensing on the guns. You might look into some kind of small thermostatically controlled heater to put in the safe or make such a device from hardwarestore/radioshack parts. Shouldn't be a insurmountable "mission to the moon" project.

Michael,
A close friend in the Puget Sound area of Wasington State had his safe in the garage and with a wipe down and intermitent fondling he had no rust. The humidity there is quite a bit higher than Montana. With a golden rod or two and our normal fondling of our toys you should make it. If I was doing it I would just monitor it a little closer this year and see if a problem crops up.

I've got two safes one in the house and one in the garage/shop. I keep guns I'm currently using in it. It's heated and cooled part of the year.
I've never had a problem with them rusting without the Golden Rod.
I'd keep a close eye on them for sure.

I keep my "truck gun" (Sav.24 .22WRM/.410) out in the cold all winter. It's Ok as long as you don't bring it indoors when it has got really cold outside. If you do, it condenses moisture from the air indoors and gets damp very quickly. The next development would be rust if it were not dried fast. I keep my guns indoors in a heated area.

Do what I plan to do. 1) Enclose, finish, move the safe and heat the your new den. 2) build a new garage.

Why don't you take a few pieces of unprotected steel and leave them out there for a few months, in about the same location where the safe would be. See what happen to them; then decide.
