Shot in the dark, I know, but does anyone have photos/drawings of the checkering styles on Charlins--grip and fore end. I have a Charlin someone restocked sans checkering and I'd like to make it as close to original as I can. Thanks.

The article I wrote for the Double Gun Journal, "Le Bon Vieux Darne", summer of 1996, shows a photo of a semi-pistol grip Charlin I owned at the time. It had been, quite skillfully, recheckered by Carol, at Ahlman's Custom Gun, and her work was far superior to what was original. Keep in mind, checkering was a production operation on these guns, especially the lower grades, and there might be differences between guns built on the same day. Europeans don't seem to go GA-GA at checkering the way Americans do, and pretty high grade continental guns often have very simple patterns applied.
Best, Ted

Skip checkering is French one and especially on Ideal's. Make it on Charlin and you'll be right on target.

Hello K, Here a couple of not so good photos of the checkering on my Idéal for your reference: If you need better pictures let me know. Best, JC

As TS mentioned above, the European nonchalance has always puzzled me. It's almost as tho they can't be bothered. I'm not sure that "GA-GA" is really the most appropriate appellation as I see it rather as just finishing the product at an acceptable level of skill. People here have displayed their personal skills and the results are far superior to what is seen on many so-called quality guns. Not long ago another member here and I were discussing this very topic as I had recently acquired a M12 stock of some vintage and was commenting on the quality of the checkering on such a common item as compared to far the majority of pricey European guns. We agreed that it was a strange situation. Much like the fly embedded in the fibreglas gastank of a factory Ducati race bike.

Thanks guys! Just for reference sake, here is the Charlin in question (along with my dog and a WI sharptail.) The gun looks naked to me without some type of checkering: a closer shot of the action:

Perfect, JayCee. Thank you! Do you also have a photo of the fore end on the first gun?
