Hi all, got a quick question. On one of my SxS's the Greener Crossbolt won't fit flush on closing. This only is when the bbls are attached and the gun is ready to shoot. When the gun is broken down the bolt fits flush. The opening lever is to the right of center and the gun is on face and tight. The gun has not been re-joined. The "hole" on the frame where the bolt goes into is clean. The gun functions just fine and has been shooting birds with no problem.

So....what may cause this? Just curious.

Its not broke in yet, the bolt sticking out is to allow for additional wear to the bearing surfaces between the bolt and the rib extension, ensuring a tight secure fit for many years. Now if the bolt is sticking out a bit farther than what looks to be "normal", you may have other problems, like possibly a weak spring..or it was just fitted in a half assed fashion. That doesnt sound as if thats the case though.

Less than perfect fit is not all that unusual on guns with Greeners. The Germans usually do a pretty good job with Mr. Greener's invention; the Spanish, not so consistently. But Dustin may have hit on it too. I have a nice little Sauer 20, older gun, on which the metal surrounding the bolt hole in the fence is actually just a little bit proud of the bolt itself--the reverse of your problem. But, like yours, mine is dead on face, not a bit of wiggle. However, my toplever is dead center, and it could well be that as wear occurred and the lever moved a bit left, the bolt seated in just a hair.

The actual "Greener" bolt is tapered to allow for wear. Your Sauer must have some miles on it to sit the way you describe it Larry.

My Greener which was refurbished by WR sits a little high.

Could be a tiny burr, but don't get out your file until you confirm the exact location of the burr.

I'd leave any filing to the professionals.

All good advice as been offered here. Make sure it is clean on all mating surfaces (no grit or burrs) and leave well alone.
Incidentally, Greener cross fasteners are round in section. Continentals are square and called Kerstan fasteners.

Thanks all for the great replies!! I don't plan on doing anything, as they say "If it ain't broke...." The gun as I said functions just fine, just was curious as to why.

Kersten is double upper Greener 'bite' on O/U guns and usually round in section. Originally Greener bolt was square and became round later. There were a few German makers that made square Kersten on their guns.
