Please excuse my noob question and my bad english. Can you kindly tell me the correct meaning of the "observed velocity" term, as per Maj. Burrard (and Eley Hawk too)? I'm not sure if it represents the pellet charge average speed from the muzzle to 20 yards, or only the speed at exactly 20 yards. BTW, Burrard's books are outstandingly factual and interesting, at least IMHO! TIA, Maxm (from Italy)

Observed velocity is the average velocity over 20 yds (18,3m) from muzzle ie 1250 mv = @1050 ov. For practicle purpose as we are discussing spherical balls of lead with a fairly constant resistance(in small game sizes 2-3mm d) it will be found that this is usually the same as the actual velocity at 9yds (8,25m)

Maxm, you are not alone in your high regard for the written works of Burrard. The only books I value more (from a technical point of view) are those penned by Gough Thomas. His complete name was Gough Thomas Garwood and in addition to his interest in things "shotgun-technical" he had the formal engineering background to understand the various complexities of the subject. There is a very good recent book on things "shotgun-technical" called Shotgun Technicana by Michael McIntosh and David Trevallion but it is not as all-encompassing as Gough Thomas' several books.

Of all those mentioned I still find Burrard's the ultimate. Miller

Thanks for your information! I have, and like a lot, Shotgun Technicana and Gough Thomas's Gun Book. Hoping to see a Shotgun Technicana Vol. Two! I don't know the Brister's book, I'll search for it. Bests, Maxm
