WC, I would not swear to it and I do not have a French double handy to check, but I believe a common notation on the barrel flats of French guns is "canon de surete"--singular. (I have to start writing this stuff down somewhere!) In which case the barrel notation on the gun shown would not prove much of anything.

Checking further, I find both singular and plural used. "Canon acier . . . " on an ad for the Manufrance Ideal; "canon de" followed by various barrel lengths on material from Darne.
