Whatever that animal is supposed to be, it's also obviously European in origin. Very similar to some others I've seen, done with absolutely no accurate idea about the animal's proper body structure and skeletal interaction. James Meek talks of this and illustrates it in his engraving book, that is, how the Euro engravers often depicted the animals' rear legs actually digging into their ribs. Too bad, it's really a very attractive rifle otherwise, with engraving that I'd like to have on one of mine (except for that animal....).

Gary,

Since I first prepared your letter back in 2008 I have discovered that your rifle, number 1111, came back through Abercrombie & Fitch as a "Left For Sale" (Consigned) rifle in 1953. I have gotten very busy of late but if you can be a bit patient I'll send you new documents that include the 1953 transaction.

If the gun was engraved when it was first built in 1930 or 1931 as appears to be the case since the notation "Fancy" appears in the ledger, it is unlikely that it is Fugger engraved. When I first started to research the ledgers I assumed that the "Fancy" notation applied to the quality of the wood. Having had the opportunity to campare more existing guns to their descriptions in the ledgers, I now believe that it meant that the rifle was engraved.

Minor issue at best if it is a Fugger.

J.D., do you have the book "the american sportsman" fall 1968? Nice article about A&F, G&H and J Fugger. Comparing your gun to the Mauser highlighted in the article, I do not see the similarity. That is only an observation and certainly not an experts opinion.

If someone can give me an idea of how I may be able to share the article and pics. Why I say idea is that I'm not sure photocopying will be the best. I can try if there is interest, just have to take to work tomorrow. I will see if at all possible to photograph the pics with a camera.

A lot of the rifle looked more Kornbrath to me than Fugger. I ask a friend who is much better at sorting these guys out and he says Kornbrath.

Anything on the receiver ring?
