Gentlemens:
There was a Davidson scope that was sometimes seen on Fraser rifles, in fact I gather there was a business relationship. It was a straight tube scope with a telescoping eye piece that slid into the main tube upon recoil. Said eyepiece had a bulbous "donut" of sorts around it to protect the eye.
It is this donut that I am in need of information on. I have a scope to work on that is missing this protector and I need to fabricate a replacement. Do any of you good folk have one that you could measure? I see from pictures that they tend to vary a bit in shape, but any information would be welcome.
It would be good to know just how it was affixed to the tube, and what it was made of. My guess is Gutta Percha, but I have never seen one or even a color photo of one.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Best to all,
Glenn Fewless

R.Glenz:
Thanks for the reply. I don't have the issue of DGJ, but I can try and scare one up. I had not thought of leather... that makes sense.
Much obliged,
Glenn

Leather covered cork, and they recoil slightly under spring tension. The scopes have no eye relief so you would need to put your eyebrow against the cushion. Very low power scopes gathered from page 55 of vol 16 issue 1
There is also one pic that a person could reverse engineer to get the aprox sizes from

This is actually a question for you guys, I don't know if this pertains to your topic or not. About ten years ago a friend who owned a gunshop near Palm Springs called me because he had bought several rifles and scopes from an estate of a man named Frasier. As I recall, two of the rifles were custom 52 Winchesters and one was a completely hand made rifle similar to a 52. Each rifle had a scope, one was a Lyman STS with custom mounts and a very strange custom reticule, the other scopes were completely custom made by Mr. Frasier. At that time I tried to find some information on Mr. Frasier, but found nothing, although several men whom I shoot with told me that they had heard of him. Mr. Frasier was obviously a 22 shooter and a very fine workman as well as a scope maker but I have no idea who he was.

LRF:
Thanks. I have written Dave about obtaining this back issue. Much obliged for your help.
S.bob:
The two Frasers are approximately one century and one continent apart. <g> I don't think I have ever heard of the gentleman you refer to.
Thanks!
Glenn

Ah Glenn, it seems that I have that issue of DGJ and have the article you desire. If'n you're not in a huge hurry I'll bring on the silver bird with me so you can read it and sleep.
