I am no expert, but I believe the 4 is for Grade 4. I just purchased a Ithaca Lewis Grade 3 and it is stamped 3 on the water table and forearm.

I agree with the over stamp. I had a gun once that had a 4 over stamped with a 2 and the gun was a 2. The scroll looks like Loy but I have never seen this engraving pattern. The dog would be a major clue but it in not sharp enough to tell. Loy dogs are rather distinctive. The S.S. are the initials of Sibley Scriver, the stocker. Runge senior was with Ithaca for a while. I have one gun his late son attributed to him. Nice Crass!

Stan, I can't quite tell from the photos...is that a deer on the right side of the receiver? Do you have any photos of the butt stock checkering?

Thanks Pete for uploading my pictures. Walt, thanks for the info you have provided as well as everyone else. Rick, the animals on both sides of the receiver appear to be elk. Left side being a cow elk & right side being a bull elk. I will try and post better pictures of the engraving and also the checkering of the buttstock & fore end. Stan

Stan, Nice gun. I am a sucker for the Crass guns. Get the gun into some bright light for the photos. It will help. Where did you find this nice example? Walt is a gentleman! Pete

Stan: A very interesting gun. Have never encountered a Crass with Elk engraving on the receiver. I have a Crass Quality 3 and a Crass Quality 4 (both 1892) guns that are Loy engraving and this gun does not look like his work. I have a Crass Quality 5 and a Crass Quality 6 (both 1900 guns) that Walt and I are pretty sure are both Laythem engraved. Both engravers seemed to feature dogs quite frequently but the Laythem engraved Quality 6 does have a running deer/stag on the trigger guard that resembles the elk on the right side of your gun. The butt stocks on the Quality 3 and Quality 4 are checkered differently...the Quality 4 having a fleur-de-lis pattern.

Here is an earlier Crass Quality 3 Loy engraved. It seems the breech ball sculpting phased out in the 20000 range. The Quality 4s had more elaborate sculpting. Maybe Ithacarick will show an example. Of note The elder Runge and Joe Loy studied under the same master at Parker Bros.

I really like the fully developed scroll work on these guns.Much more interesting than the Winchester scroll used on the late 21's,in my view.

Loy put little dashes over the tips of his scrolls on the Ithaca guns he engraved, that is on the ones I have seen. Don't know if this is consistent of all his work.
