That is the million dollar question. I'm surprised no one has researched the psychology of auction behavior. There has to be some primeval segment in certain folks' DNA that goes back to a time before creatures walked on land. This behavior is expressed today in various ways. It causes fish to strike a shiny lure and it makes people bid high prices for worn-out tractors prettied up with a fresh coat of Rustoleum. It also causes them to make early and high opening bids and often pay way over retail. If both parents posess this gene sequence, their progeny will be born without a brain.
