I think Howe mentions caucasian walnut in his books on gunsmithing in the section on stockmaking. I'm going from a decade old memory of reading that section but I'm pretty sure.Good walnut is where you find it, I guess.

I love pens. I love the tradition, the craftsmanship, the art of writing. No other instrument approaches the beauty of pen on paper. Unfortunatly I'm among the common people and a Pelikan is about as rich as I go. I also love pipes (which I no longer smoke), bamboo fly rods, vintage airplanes, SXS shotguns, flintlock rifles, etc. Is there a pattern emerging here?.....

Joe, I agree wholeheartedly. I tried explaining this to someone regarding the label in the case that houses my BP Purdey. Along the sides, written in the loveliest penmanship with ink and nib, load information for the gun, 150 years old.

Like letter writing itself, penmanship is a dying, nearly extinct art.

Yes it is, Krakow Kid. But there's our chance to do something special that only requires a minute or two. A hand scribbled note, saying nothing of importance, in a hand addressed envelope is often elevated by the recipient to the level of a keepsake! Fun.....

I just duplicated a shot charge card for my Lang off another example I had in exacting detail. It is now a replica of perfection save one thing: I lack the penmanship and steadiness of hand to actually write my gun's serial number and the recommended powder & charge on the label myself.

I'm looking for someone with great penmanship to finish the deed so I can affix it in the Lang's case.

Penmanship is a dead art. I've attempted to write a note recently and found it hard to even remember the process of writing all the cursive letters after 17 years of typing 60 hours a week.

Rookhawk, a tip: when you're just doodling on a piece of paper, go back to elementary school and doodle the alphabet in large and small letters. Do it slowly and in the way you were taught. It'll surprise you how quickly it all comes back to you. Another tip: don't use a ball point pen--use a felt tip. Better yet, find a fountain pen.
