Knowing Jim I figure he's talking about an Ithaca Lefever.

Rem,

Unfortunately he has retired. He was a great gunsmith. My Lefever was one of the last projects he did. I still see him once in a while. My cousin has a place in NY state near where he lives.

Bill:

Good for him, bad for me. The little Greener .22 is one of my favorite rifles and I'd had some thoughts about having him do a Marlin 1894 in .256 Winchester, but never followed through (college expenses for the brood having made a serious dent in the toy funds balance).

Please give him my regards if you see him again. He probably won't remember me, but the afternoon I spent in his shop was one of the real highlights of my firearms experience.

Actually, they have an adjustable ball socket that takes the place of a hinge pin. Early Lefevers had several wear compensating features, but most were dropped over time as they proved to be both unnecessary and costly. As Miller noted, there are several different cocking systems, and the correct barrels of the correct type must be found. Then, with the cocking hook models, it is sometimes found that any but very minor addjustment of the ball socket will push the barrels back enough that the pin in the lump that engages the cocking hook will now slip past it without cocking the gun. This is also assuming that one can even turn this adjustment screw. Many almost seem as though they were set with some 19th century version of Red Loctite, and defy efforts to turn them. We also see quite a few that have been buggered by attempts to move them.

Jim, if you have barrels that actually are within .001" of closing, they very possibly could be fit to that gun by the smoke and stone method or backing off the adjustment a small bit or some combination of these. But if you do stone, or otherwise remove metal, they may then be loose on the parent gun and really hurt the value.

Keith Kearcher in Bend, Oregon has fit barrels from one Lefever to an action from another for me twice. He created two mixed number but very usable guns from four piles of previously almost useless parts. Either he or Buck Hamlin have the skill to do what you want done.

I use Keith for almost all of my double projects as we live in the same small town thus avoiding the shipping risks. He called yesterday to say a recently acquired C grade which someone had poorly sleeved down from 12 to 16 is ready to be picked up after he cleaned up the sleeve joint and blued the tubes; we're looking for a set of 12 gauge barrels from a gun with in frame ejectors to make it into a two gauge gun (the 16 barrels are really too narrow at the standing breech, but are completely functional, just weird looking with a small flange at the junction).

Now that does sound like an interesting (and somewhat strange) project. Please post some pictures of this at some point please.
