My dog will drink from a regular water bottle and I wouldn't have bought this, but it was a gift and I thought some of the bbs members may find it useful for dogs that are particularly sloppy drinkers from bottles or won't learn. Nevertheless, it works well and takes no more room than a regular waterbottle.
