I had the pleasure of handling this monster bored beauty at a dealer friend of mine Sunday. I must admit I was impressed. The gun had been reworked at some time but was done very professionally, and not over buffed/sanded. The bore appeared shootable, but I didn't have my tools with me. I can't lay the cash right now but it will last I'm sure. Could someone enlighten me as to what parts I should critique when I return to deal on this gun in 6 weeks or so? I must admit that I am not too familiar with English guns especially muzzleloaders. The price is in the 2500 range, is this fair? It seemed like a nice gun, and I had a joy just handling it.

Steve, from here all I can say is a fellow I know bought a used original muzzleloader, the bores were somewhat pitted and rusty but they “looked serviceable’. His first load was none to difficult to load but after a only a few shots that bore and the resulting fowling was tearing up his wadding, both the over-powder and over-shot wads and he tried both 2FG and 3FG.

I saw a pristine William Moore built muzzleloader, which is on par with the Hollis & Sheath, sell for $1,500 a few years back but that was a 12 gauge and in pristine never been shot condition. There is also a real nice unmarked muzzleloader but it has Birmingham proof marks, a 14 gauge selling for around $1,500.00 at Dixie but that gun has been there over a couple of years.

Two places to look for comparison shopping on antique muzzle loaders are: Track of the Wolf (US) and Henry Krank (UK). Obviously, they aren't the only places but they usually have a selection and real prices. Lewis and Drake have some interesting muzzle-loaders at out of this world prices (they do seem to sell them though).

Steve - Are you sure this gun was a 6 bore and not a 10 bore? There was a beautiful looking Hollis & Sheath 10 bore for sale back in December I was considering, but further investigation by a gentleman I met on this board, a gentleman in the truest sense of the word, revealed evidence of a one time awful "incident" that had been "repaired".

Yes it is definately an original 6 bore. I thought 2500 seemed steep, but big bore doubles are aren't that common either so that is why I posted. Finding something comparable is difficult.
