That's what I get for nicknaming this guy a couple years ago. Just wait until I find a "Square-Pants" rifle.

Looks more like a "W" than an "S".

Not bad, the only time I get to buy something without being there is when the wife takes the credit card to Wal-Mart.

That is some of the most detailed wood carving I have seen on a rifle, very nice. It appears that this guy liked American walnut. Very nice find, good luck with the rebuild. What year would you guess that the rifle was made?

John,

It's just a guess but I think circa 1919-1921. Many have the early Lyman 48 and this one is cut for the 48 introduced in 1919.

I had a D M Lefever "cross bolt" on display as Vegas with a more subdued "S" grip - from the Syracuse era of that company. None of us had ever seen another Lefever with that grip, but it is found on some other shotguns from that area. There is some very simply border carving on the gun, not a leaf pattern like these rifles. The Lefever would have been made circa 1902 or '03. Maybe your "Unknown" was working near Syracuse and later moved to Chicago.

Terry,

I have no idea where he worked but suspect the East coast because they seem to built on Springfield Armory rifles. Outside of that I'm clueless. Hopefully one will turn up with a provenance I can trace.

Terry,

I'm sure you will remember this rifle with a 'S' grip. I suspect Singer of Los Angeles but have not found another to compare it with. I've seen some of his shotguns and the work looks like it could be his.
