If the gun dates from 1887-1925, you'd have 12 over LC inside a diamond. From 1925 into the 80's, it would be marked 3". Chamber length in MM would not appear unless the gun was made (or submitted for reproof) since the late 80's. So should be pretty easy to tell, unless the chambers were punched to 3" and the gun not submitted for reproof.
That's what I was afraid of. This gun has 12 over just "C" in the diamond, which I'm sure meant regular 2 3/4" chambers. It also shows proof for 1 1/4 oz. shot, which I'm told is also a 2 3/4 indicator.
I really wanted this gun, but the chambers measure 3", so it sure looks like someone decided to create their own "magnum". Goes to show that one can't always tell by inspecting the bore....there is no sign at all of anyone having messed with the chambers.
Thanks for the help.
