You might contact "Wing Pointe" sporting clays facility. They are in the middle of pigeon country and may know about the "schedule".

It's still alive and well in PA though there aren't nearly as many shoot locations these days. I was just out a couple weeks ago and shot "in the coal regions" at a PA Flyer event.

I'll second eightbore's suggestion on the book. I bought it some years ago at his suggestion, and was not disappointed.

Not as many flyer shoots down heah', but we've got one coming up this month near me.

Destry, where did you shoot in the "coal regions"? In Anthracite country, they always shot one shot flyers. Do they still do that? My Grandfather's ring on Pine Street in Hazleton was a one shot ring.

We shot at a new place that Bickel and some friends have been building up, it was a two barrel race. That day they were shooting the NY State Championship and the US Open Championship I believe.

There's apparently only one single barrel match left. We were supposed to shoot in it on Saturday then the new place on Sunday but had the dates wrong and missed the single barrel event. Ask Russ about the single barrel match, I'm sure he'll share the details as to location.

Does anyone have a drawing of the ring layout and rules? Someone interested, but wants to keep it low profile. Also, I recall some discussion of using quail in lieu of pigeons. Is this a successful substitution?

A couple of years ago here in N.C. a guy tried to start a pigeon shoot. He had the traps and leased a spot on a farm, put up the ring and wired everything up to work . Seems finding pigeons was a real problem. Trapping them was hard to do and buying and keeping them was expensive.
From what I remember he tried chukar and had some good sucess with them. The real upside was chukar are good to eat.

This guy has both chukar and quail in good supply. So, he could try them and find out which is better.

From what I understand, pigeons here are now over $5.00 a bird. There are a lot of barn pigeons around, but getting someone to trap them is another thing.
The quail would be tougher to hit especially launched.

I've had 20 years expirience with pen raised quail in do training. They are hit or miss (no pun intended). Many a time I've been to a field trial or bought birds and they come out of a releaser and just flutter a bit. Pen raised birds do not explode anything like wild ones. The secret seems to be raising them from a young age in a large "flight" pen and minimizing imprinting. I wouldn't chance using quail. Around here we get barn pigeons from the Amish communities. We have to buy them 200 at time for dog training but using them up over the summer is not hard to do and they keep very easily. We pay 1.50 ea for them and buy 'em 200-300 at a time.
