The answer is yes, and the reason being the soft steel used in especially the cheaper grades of Shotguns.

I have my Great-Great Grand Fathers old Hardware Stores gun, it is stamped full and isn't, and it has the sharp thin barrel walls at the muzzle as mentioned ealier. It wasn't from shooting steel, as he was in the Grave before steel came on the scene, it was not fired after he died until my Great Grandmother gave it to me many years later.
