The true reading is exactly at the muzzle. This tool is only "advisory." Constriction must be measured at the start of the choke taper and at the minimum diameter; this should be at the muzzle or a bit back if the choke is cut with a parallel that has gotten cut divergent. Don't worry about exacting measurements. Shotguns are sufficiently variable pattern to pattern (shot to shot) that choke is an average. It takes several thou difference in constriction to really make much difference in practical performance.

Both of the respondants are correct: the tool is totally worthless in the extreme! If all guns were bored to the exact nominal diameter of their gauge it'd be fine but the majority are either overbored or underbored. It's very easy for the error to exceed 20 thousanths....or more. Get a refund!

Oh, now they make them out of aluminium. That makes them even more useless. The brass ones could at least be used as a decoy anchor.

Tough love indeed, but thanks for the feedback! I have to send another item back (screws that aren't the right size), so I may send the gauge back too. I did think it might be handy to take to a show to get a rough idea of chokes.

That gauge will not tell you anything about a bore or a choke. You need Galazan's $125 bore micrometer. To measure 12-28, you need two of them. Brownell sells the identical gauge for under $100 under the "Skeet's" name.
