oldstarfire, yes, it really does not detract from your well designed label. Maybe what the caption meant was that Syracuse Forging Co. [owned by Dr. Ellis Baker, William Baker's brother] did start in 1885. William Baker the gun designer, left Ithaca Gun Co. in ca. 1886 and joined his brother with the intent to add gunmaking to the Syracuse Forging Co. line. Shortly, then, the Company name became Syracuse Forging and Gun Company, and the locations and name changes progressed as I mentioned above. I guess we can give the Bakers license to "Established in 1885". A lot of gunmakers seemed to use license when advertising that they had been in business "since" some date. Sometimes those dates are incorrect. I know Ithaca Gun Company used "founded in 1880 in their company literature, later knowing full well that they started in 1883. But, it was easier, I guess, for them to go on with the incorrect date than to change it.
It would be interesting to know the source of your illustration and caption for it.

I found the source -"The Baker Gunner, No.4, 1909 - A CATALOGUE OF BAKER AND BATAVIA GUNS" 20 pages plus covers, on inside back cover.
$12.95 from Cornell Publications if you want one.

Here's a scan of a Baker ad from a 1905 edition of Recreation Edit: Just noticed my image is almost a duplicate of the ad shown in Drew Hause's post (2nd post in thread). Didn't mean to post something so similar, but it's interesting that they used different wording in their text for these 1905 ads.

Yes, it is the same or extremely similar picture with different wording. Interesting and happy to see them all.

I think that the design used for the Baker Gun & Forging Co portion of the sign in this picture from the 1897 Sportsmen's Expo would make a great label for a cased Baker gun. If the label were done with black background and the border and lettering done in gold mounted in a case with a green or red interior.

In case anyone is interested, here is the Baker portion of the article on the 1897 Sportsmen's Expo that contained the picture I posted. It sounds as though this may be where they debuted (or one of the places that they debuted) their "Pigeon" grade.

Mr. Fischer, was this ad from a magazine called the 1897 Sportsmen's Expo or is a picture taken at the 1897 Sportsmen's Expo? Thanks

Daryl - The magazine was The Sportsman's Magazine, Vol. II - No. 1 April 1897. It contained an article titled The Sportsmen's Exposition of 1897. The article included a number of photos in addition to the one I posted and small paragraphs about some of the participating firms. Google Books even has a PDF of it online included in a collection of The Sportsmen's Magazine for Oct. 1896 through April 1897 http://books.google.com/books?id=308QAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q&f=falseAnd feel free to call me Brent... Mr. Fischer is way too formal! Thanks for the links Drew, hadn't seen those before.
