I'm always taken with the Darnes when I see them at Holts and other auctions. Albiet older ones than this. They look striking...other than that I know little about them Thanks for the pictures though. T

This is in Ted Schefelbein territory. I do like French guns and rely on PA-15 M1 for home protection. The thing is deadly even w/o ammo and that's against steel helmet wearing villain I might add. In case you have not already asked there..... Here we go......

John, just for your reference, here is a posher one but that has the same basic proof marks, i.e. Crown over PT and lightning bolts and three crossed feathers and crown: JC

It's an R10 that has spent some time against a buffing wheel. It should look like the case colored R10 in this photo: Good, servicable double, if it fits your friend-that said, they usually don't, and a steel rod running down the wrist keeps them from being fitted by bending the stock. Serial number and 70mm chamber marking point to 1950s production. Safe to use with modern 2 3/4 ammunition, but, lighter loads are more comfortable to shoot. Enjoy. Best, Ted

It looks like the gun was made in the late 60's-early 70's, and is an R10. I presume that the 6A year designator continues, i.e 6B, 6C, etc, since 1975 the serial numbers begin with 7A. Under this premise, the one you've pictured would probably be from 1971-1973 perhaps.

6A...1968-1974

It looks like I was typing this up the same time Ted posted! I'd trust his manufacture dates more than the dates I posted.

Oh yea, I forgot-information. The crossed lightning bolt 'thingies indicate the gun was proofed in a finished state (completed). Not sure why this is marked on French guns, but, it is. The three crossed palm leaves indicate triple proof at the St. Etienne proof house. French triple proof is as high a level of proof as proof goes in Europe. 18.2 is 12 gauge expressed in metric. The left barrel is choked pretty tight, and they don't want you running pumpkin ball type slugs through it. The letters PT indicate proof with smokeless powder T, pretty much the standard French smokeless powder since 1900. Tell your friend I said to use the gun in good health.
Best, Ted
