Sandlapper, I saw you question and remember just reading an answer to a similar question posed in a back issue of The Doublegun Journal. Per the author, he thought that competitive shooters at the time wanted the very best internals but did not want to pay extra for the ornamentation so they ordered a higher grade sans the engraving to save money. When I get home tonight I'll try to reference the issue. I'm thinking it was one from 1998 or 1999. (I am in the process of re-reading all my copies of the DGJ in chronological order)
