Rat cheer! Do remember that this has to do with the value/price the makers name adds. Do remember that makers supplied various Original Qaulity grades. It is an error to try to associate OQ with maker's name.
BRAND VALUE OF MAKER’S NAMES
BV1 Makers’ Names – Price Factor = 8
Boss, Holland & Holland, Purdey, and Woodward
BV2 Makers’ Names – Price Factor = 6
Westley Ricahrds, Dickson, Rigby, Grant , Beesley, Powell, Atkin, Churchill, Henry, Lancaster, Evans, Watson, Wilks, Greener, Boswell, Gibbs, and Lang
BV3 Makers’ Names – Price Factor = 4
Rest of the British Trade and top Continental (Bury, LeBeau, Masquelier, Francotte, Brancquart, Le Page, Gastine Renatte, etc.)
BV4 Makers’ Names – Price Factor = 2
Lesser known Continental names or names largely associated with low OQ grades
BV5 Makers’ Names – Price Factor = 1
Unknown names or unnamed
For example, a SLE Purdey BV1) would value at 8 times a unnamed continental (BV5) SLE masterpiece (usually made by a journeyman to prove his mastery of the trade and gain promotion to master status) where both are in equal current condition (CC).

I find the tiers to be pretty accurate in relation to shotgun values, but off in respect to the value of rifles by maker. Interesting non the less and useful.

So what is the formula that one would use to establish the ballpark value of a gun? I've seen others quote it and come up with a figure, knowing it's probably just a ballpark, coiuld someone spell this out?

Don, do you mean to imply that in 120 years, we haven't figured out which guns are of what quality? I guess the assumption may be that, although Reilly (or whatever brand) is a great gun, but no one has figured it out yet? What about the value of a sidelock of a certain make that is NOT "stocked to the fences" versus the value of a sidelock of the same make and degree of finish that IS "stocked to the fences".

Thanks David, drop me a line on the PM and I'll fix you up. Basically, you have to make an estimate of OQ and CC, as weel as BV. Then,I have developed look-up tables to give you a "ball-park" value.
