Mr McPhail - I recently acquired a beautiful BP Percussion Mullin 10 bore muzzleloader. The only thing engraved are the screws(!) but the sheer beauty of the gun's lines and metal to wood fit are astounding.
I couldn't find a serial # ANYwhere on this gun. Perhaps it is too early a piece? Where are serial #'s usually found on his (perhaps later)guns?
The ONLY thing I could find on this extraordinary man, Patrick Mullin, was his obituary in the Dec 16, 1895 edition of the NY Times. He "had been identified for more than 50 years with business life in Fulton Street and Maiden Lane" where "he turned out guns of his own handiwork that were unsurpassed in excellence." He was 81 years old when he died.
I take pleasure in researching and knowing when a particular gun of mine was manufactured, but in this case I can't. I suppose this gun could have been made circa 1860 - 70, but that's a pure guess.
Anyway, I enjoyed this thread in learning of another obscure American made shotgun, and also took pleasure at the mention of Mullin and his guns. Quite interesting that they both seemed to have catered to waterfowlers (mentioned in the obit)with their emphasis on turning out big bore guns.
Many Thanks to all who contributed - Marc
