Jeff,

Thank you for your several postings of, to me at least, previously unseen early American gun makers. While I have recently obtained examples of the partnership era Lefever guns, now I guess I'll have to broaden my horizons!

Beautiful gun. A small point of interest for me is the gold shield on the stock grip just behind the top tang. You can see it's a little proud, yet other metal to wood fit is flawless.

I have the same gold shield on my Patrick Mullin. It too is a little proud, and because all the other metal to wood fit is so absolutely perfect I originally thought it was an aftermarket affectation that some owner affixed. But when I mentioned it to Daryl he informed me that no, this in fact is original to the gun.

So, two different American gunmakers producing wonderful big bores, both eschewing engraving, and both adding this little simple "adornment", yet not perfectly inletting it flush with the wood even though they were more than able to.

A tiny intriguing mystery, to me at least.

Thanks KK...I see what you are talking about. I believe most of the McComas guns...(barrels and actions) and serial numbers on the barrels are in line with W.C. Scott numbers...thus are really Scott guns finished by McComas. Check out the Krider - W.C. Scott 12 I posted pics of...has a rectangular shield. Here are some pics of my McComas 8 gauge muzzleloader...again..I believe it is a W.C. Scott gun. Jeff
