Mike, as is many times the case when opening a topic on this forum, there is no prevailing wisdom except for the admonition to proceed carefully.

I still favor the idea of a break-open gun, as at a glance its readiness to fire is easy to ascertain. Since a double with 2Ts can be used as a single with the convenience of a built-in shortened LOP to the rear trigger, that is my leaning. Also, many more are available with slender, open grips for smaller hands. Having said that, I would sieze the opportunity to experiment with a youth-sized soft-shooting autoloader, but only after we get the basics of gun safety down pat.

It occurred to me after reading some of the posts that in a relatively few short years when a 6 1/2 pound gun is manageable, my 26" skeet/skeet 12b 2 1/2" could become a suitable field gun with the 7/8 or 1 oz. loads. It's balanced behind the pin and feels lighter than it is.

My friend's 20 comes with .410 inserts, I may take it along to the practice field with some 2 1/2" and let my son touch off a few, the recoil should be minimal. After reading the posts about girls getting into the sport, at some point I think I'll bring my teenage daughters and let them try out with the little gun. They've never shown the slightest interest but how do I know they wouldn't enjoy the experience? Who knows they might be shooting the old man's doves for him this season.

I have found that girls and women really enjoy the shooting when --
it does not hurt,
does not last too long
and they have the right master eye for how they wish to shoot

RC,
I've seen some girls/ladies take to shooting with enthusiasm when boys/men alongside them had little interest. Every weekend, a local shooting instructor has a handful of youths out on the SC range. Often there are girls in there. I shot quite a bit with Kim Rhodes when she was 13-14, really fun and enlightening to shoot with a kid so young and so talented back then.

Roy,
I've never seen one. Possibly it's because jug choking is usually a last desparate attempt to put any choke effect possible into a gun that had been bored cylinder. Kind of a 'whatever you can get'. I've never had one done and would rather just have a soldered in sleeve that would allow for any choke amount desired.

I didnt realise soldering a sleeve into the barrel was an option. I was wondering if I could cut a thread and screw in a commercial choke. More to think about!

Roy,
Briley and other companies have pioneered the screw-in choke industry. Briley can put a screw-in choke in most barrels with adequate wall thickness. They are probably the most experienced screw-in choke company. They are in Texas.

Thanks mate. What I will try first up is cyl bore with low velocity 3/4 oz loads, they should pattern tight anyway. If it doesnt work I can look at having chokes fitted. Thanks for the link Chuck.

it has been my experience that if a cylinder bore barrel is jug choked it will provide tighter patterns than before the work was done. ammo specs are also a contributing factor to pattern density.

it has also been my experience that adding choke tubes to a side by side gun is risky business. sometimes the gun will no longer shoot both barrels to same point of aim as before tubing work was performed.

Roy,
You might also try using a steel shot wad, as they are much more stout on the petals and should further tighten the pattern.
